GEO vs. SEO vs. AEO: what's actually different

New acronyms appear every year, and each comes with someone selling it. Here's what GEO, SEO and AEO each mean, where they genuinely differ, where they don't, and how to prioritize your effort.

The short answer

SEO (search engine optimization) helps you rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your content become the direct answer, in featured snippets, voice assistants and AI tools. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps you get mentioned and cited by generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. They overlap heavily: Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for its AI features. The real differences are in what you measure and how much brand mentions matter.

What's genuinely different about GEO

  • Ranking #1 isn't required. An Ahrefs study found only 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appeared in Google's top 10 for the same prompt, because AI tools run several related searches behind the scenes.
  • Mentions matter more. Across 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated more strongly with AI Overview visibility (0.664) than backlinks did (0.218), according to Ahrefs. That's a correlation, not proof of cause, but it points in a consistent direction.
  • Answers vary. SparkToro found AI tools returned the same list of brands fewer than 1 in 100 times. In our own AI Visibility Index, local answers changed substantially between two runs. So GEO has to be measured as a share across many prompts.
  • Not every tool searches. In our test, Gemini showed web citations in only 1 of 20 answers, so it relied on what the model already knew. Being widely mentioned over time matters for those tools.

What isn't different

  • Google says SEO still applies. Its AI features rely on its core ranking systems, and it says no special optimization is required to appear in AI Overviews.
  • Crawlability still comes first. If search engines and AI crawlers can't reach your pages, nothing else matters.
  • Quality still wins. Google's 2026 guidance emphasizes unique, helpful content, and specifically says tactics like llms.txt files and content "chunking" aren't needed for its AI features.

How to prioritize

  1. Fix the foundation: crawlable, indexable pages with clear content. This serves all three.
  2. Answer real questions clearly: descriptive headings and direct answers backed by specifics. Good for AEO and GEO, and for readers.
  3. Earn mentions, not just links: reviews, directories, comparison articles, industry coverage.
  4. Measure all three: rankings and conversions for SEO, plus AI visibility across repeated prompts for GEO.
Be skeptical of: anyone selling GEO as a completely separate discipline with secret tactics, or promising guaranteed placement in ChatGPT. The evidence points to good SEO plus deliberate work on mentions and measurement.

FAQ

GEO, SEO and AEO: common questions

What is GEO in SEO?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the practice of helping your content get found, understood and cited by generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The term comes from a 2023 research paper that found certain content changes could raise visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40% in lab tests.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI tools draw heavily on web content, and Google says its AI features rely on the same core ranking systems as regular search, so SEO remains the foundation. GEO adds attention to how AI tools select and cite sources, such as brand mentions and answer-first content.

What's the difference between GEO and AEO?

They overlap heavily. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the older term, often used for featured snippets and voice assistants as well as AI answers. GEO refers specifically to generative AI tools. In practice, most of the work is the same.

Do I need a separate GEO agency?

Usually not. Be cautious of anyone selling GEO as a completely separate service with secret tactics. Most effective GEO work is strong SEO plus deliberate attention to mentions, clear answers and AI visibility tracking.
