Home services SEO: more calls for HVAC, plumbing, roofing and contractors
When a homeowner's AC quits or a pipe bursts, they call one of the first businesses they see. Home services SEO helps make sure that's you, on Google Maps, in search results and in the AI tools homeowners are starting to ask.
Home services SEO helps HVAC companies, plumbers, roofers, electricians and other contractors show up when nearby homeowners search for help. Growth Rankers covers Google Business Profile and service areas, a page for every service you want more calls for, a steady review system, technical SEO, call tracking, and visibility in AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
Two kinds of searches, two kinds of pages
| Search type | Examples | What wins it |
|---|---|---|
| Urgent | "AC repair near me," "emergency plumber," "roof leak repair" | Google Business Profile, accurate hours, reviews, click-to-call, and a fast emergency service page |
| Planned | "new HVAC system cost," "roof replacement," "tankless water heater installation" | Detailed service pages that explain options, cost factors and timelines, plus project photos and reviews |
| AI recommendations | "Who's a good HVAC company in [city]?" asked in ChatGPT or Google | Consistent listings, reviews on the sites AI tools cite, and a website with clear service details |
What home services SEO covers
Google Business Profile & service area
The right categories, services, hours and service area. Google's guidelines say service areas shouldn't extend beyond roughly two hours' drive from your base.
Service pages
A page for each job you want more of: repair, replacement, installation, maintenance plans, emergency service.
Location pages done right
Pages for your key markets with real local content, not copy-paste "doorway" pages Google's spam policies warn against.
Reviews
A simple way to ask every customer for a review after the job, and reply templates for the good and the bad.
Trust signals
License and insurance details, warranties, financing options and project photos, the details homeowners check before they call.
Call tracking & AI visibility
Know which pages and searches bring in calls, and what AI tools say when homeowners ask for a contractor in your area.
What our AI Visibility Index found for HVAC and plumbing
In October 2026, we asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google to recommend an HVAC company and a plumber in Greenville, NC, twice each. Two findings matter for contractors anywhere:
- Top map rankings didn't guarantee AI recommendations. The three HVAC companies in Google's map results had 4.8 to 4.9 stars and between 593 and about 2,100 reviews each, yet Google's own AI Overview named none of them in either run, and its second answer swapped in two different companies.
- Plumbing was more consistent. Google's AI Overview gave identical plumbing recommendations both times, and they largely matched the map results.
- The sources AI tools cited for these trades included Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Expertise.com, an HVAC directory, and the companies' own websites.
The takeaway: reviews and map rankings matter, but they aren't enough on their own. Be accurately listed on the directories AI tools cite, and give them a website with clear, specific service information. Read the full AI Visibility Index.

Home services SEO: your questions answered
What is home services SEO?
Home services SEO helps contractors such as HVAC companies, plumbers, roofers and electricians show up when homeowners search for help in their area, on Google Maps, in regular results and in AI tools. It covers your Google Business Profile, service and service-area pages, reviews, technical site health and call tracking.
Is SEO or Google Local Services Ads better for contractors?
They do different jobs. Local Services Ads are paid placements at the top of some searches; you pay per lead and they stop when you stop paying. SEO builds organic map and search visibility over time. Many contractors use both: ads for immediate calls, SEO for a steadier, lower-cost flow of leads.
Should I create a page for every town I serve?
Only if each page is genuinely useful. Google's spam policies treat near-duplicate pages created just to rank for different locations as doorway pages. A better approach is a page for each main service, plus location pages for your key markets with real, specific content: projects, service details and reviews from that area.
How long does SEO take for an HVAC company or plumber?
Google Business Profile and listing fixes can show results within weeks. Service pages and reviews typically build over several months. Starting before your busy season gives SEO time to work when demand peaks.
How much does SEO cost for a contractor?
It depends on your trade, service area and how competitive your market is. Every engagement is scoped after a free consultation, with a fixed proposal before work begins. See our guide to how much SEO costs for general pricing context.
